SVA Rule #2. 

When there is a subject phrase, it is important to find the main subject in order to make sure there is an agreement between the subject and verb in the sentence. To do this, we can remove prepositional phrases in the subject phrase.

The trolls from the neighborhood were looking for the loo.

The walrus with the carpenter is eating all the oysters.

 Example #3. 

Find the main subject and verb by removing the prepositional phrases in these sentences.

Henbane, in addition to hops, gives the potion a real kick.

Berenice as well as Benedict was hidden under the cloak.

The cabin of clay and wattles was built by William Butler Yeats.

The owl together with the pussycat has gone to sea in a beautiful pea-green boat.

Dorothy along with the lion, the scarecrow, the woodman, and her little dog Toto is following the yellow brick road.
